Sehar Kharal and the Muslim Food Bank in Brampton
Food insecurity in Brampton doesn’t look like what most people picture. It’s a family that’s fine one month and short the next, after a layoff or a rent increase. Sehar Kharal, a strategic planning consultant, volunteers with the Muslim Food Bank’s Brampton location, which exists for exactly those months.
The Brampton branch runs out of 6 Lowry Drive, with hamper distribution on the third Sunday of every month. Hampers are the front end of it. The location also offers mental health counselling, employment guidance, and casework — the kind of support that determines whether someone is back next month or not. Food hampers go to families of any background, with meats that are halal and pork-free.
That combination is part of what drew Sehar Kharal to the organization. The work is unglamorous and immediate — someone gets groceries this week who otherwise wouldn’t have — but the casework side is what moves a household off the list entirely.
Ask Sehar Kharal what people can do and the answer is short: give time or give money. Volunteers sign up through the website for food distribution, casework, outreach, or event support, whether that’s weekly or occasionally.
On the money side, the organization’s programs are Zakat eligible under a 100% Zakat policy — what you give for Zakat reaches recipients rather than overhead. Sadaqah is accepted too, and it isn’t restricted the same way, so it can go toward the broader community programs.
